MGMT 645 Week 1 DB Forum 1 Example

Reviewed by Thomas Kerrigan, MBA, CPA · Liberty University · Updated

This MGMT 645 Week 1 example is the DB Forum 1 thread for Liberty University MGMT 645 Quality Management, part of Liberty's project management master's, and written in the opening five-day module with chapters 1 and 2 of Rose's Project Quality Management and the PMBOK Guide's first three chapters. The composite prompt asks students to define quality in a project setting and explain why a project can meet its specifications and still disappoint its customer. The thread answers from a residential remodeling company whose kitchen renovation passed every inspection and matched every drawing, yet left the homeowner unable to open the dishwasher and the pantry door at once. It sets Crosby's conformance view beside Juran's fitness for use, draws on Rose and on Dean and Bowen's review of total quality, and closes with Bezalel's skill in Exodus.

MGMT 645 Quality Management, Discussion Board Forum 1: Thread

Thread by [Student Name]

The prompt and the remodeling project are composites standing in for the course's own forum; Rose's text, the PMBOK Guide, the scholarly sources and Scripture are real; the requirements follow Liberty's public course guide for MGMT 645.

Why this part earns its pointsThe thread opens with a project that met every specification and still failed its customer, the exact gap the forum asks about.

Last spring our remodeling company finished a kitchen for a retired couple: new maple cabinets, a quartz countertop, a gas range and a dishwasher, all installed exactly as drawn. The county inspector passed the electrical and plumbing work on the first visit, the countertop seams were invisible, and the final walk-through punch list had only two items. Three days after we left, the homeowner called. The dishwasher sat at the end of the run beside the new pantry, and when the dishwasher door was open, the pantry door could not swing past it. She had to close one to use the other several times a day. Every item had been built to specification. The kitchen still did not work.

That story captures the central tension in defining quality. Crosby (1979) defined quality as conformance to requirements, which made quality measurable and put responsibility on getting the requirements right. By that definition, our kitchen was a quality job. Juran's alternative, that quality means fitness for use, judges the product by whether it serves the customer's purpose, and by that definition we failed (Juran & Godfrey, 1999). The two definitions agree only when the requirements capture what the customer actually needs, and ours did not: the drawings placed the dishwasher where plumbing was cheapest without anyone asking how the homeowner moved around the room.

Rose (2014) argues that project quality must be planned from the beginning around the customer's needs, rather than inspected into the product at the end. Our process did the opposite. We had a detailed inspection checklist, which caught crooked doors and uneven seams, but our design review asked only whether the drawings met code and fit the budget. Dean and Bowen (1994), reviewing total quality management, identified customer focus as one of its core principles alongside continuous improvement and teamwork, and that principle was absent from our design stage. The PMBOK Guide also distinguishes quality from grade: quality is the degree to which a product's characteristics fulfill requirements, while grade describes products with the same use but different features (Project Management Institute, 2017). Our kitchen was high grade, with expensive materials, but it was not high quality, because it did not fulfill the requirement that mattered most to the person using it.

Why this part earns its pointsThe thread names the change the company made, which shows the lesson moving from definition to practice.

After that call, we added a step to our design process: the designer walks the homeowner through a full day in the planned kitchen, door by door, using a floor plan with every swing drawn in. It takes forty minutes. In the six kitchens since, it has caught four conflicts that the drawings and the inspector would never have found.

Exodus records that the craftsman Bezalel was chosen by name for the tabernacle and given the Spirit's gifts of skill and understanding for designing and for working metal, cutting stone and carving wood (English Standard Version Bible, 2001/2016, Exodus 31:1-5). Bezalel's craftsmanship was measured by how well it served the purpose of the place, not only by how finely it was cut. For a Christian builder, quality is a form of service to the people who will live with the work.

Classmates: have you worked on a project that met its specifications and still disappointed the people it was for?

What the MGMT 645 Week 1 instructions ask

MGMT 645 opens with a five-day module in which this 30-point thread sits beside the checklist and an ungraded introduction, read with the first three chapters of the PMBOK Guide, the first two of Rose and a presentation. The guide's rule for every forum thread in the course is a length between 400 and 1,000 words that shows a grasp of the readings, after which every student answers two classmates, keeping each reply between 250 and 300 words. Unlike several other project management courses at Liberty, the MGMT 645 guide sets no minimum number of sources for threads or replies, but a thread that uses the readings and a scholarly source shows the knowledge the guide asks for. The 100-point Project Charter and Proposal follows in Module/Week 2, and a project chosen early can serve both.

How this MGMT 645 Week 1 example is built

The thread begins with the remodel: new cabinets, a quartz countertop and appliances installed exactly to the drawings, inspected and signed off, and a homeowner who discovered that the dishwasher door and the pantry door could not open at the same time. It then separates two ideas of quality. Crosby's definition, conformance to requirements, says the kitchen was a quality job, while Juran's fitness for use says it was not. Rose's argument that project quality must be planned from the customer's needs at the start explains where the project went wrong, and Dean and Bowen's account of total quality's customer focus supports it. The PMBOK Guide's distinction between quality and grade adds precision. Bezalel, filled with skill for the tabernacle's work, frames craftsmanship as service.

MGMT 645 Week 1 grading rubric: where the points go

MGMT 645 grades Forum 1 on what it shows of the course material and on meeting the guide's length band of 400 to 1,000 words. A strong thread defines quality precisely, using the readings rather than a dictionary, and shows the difference between competing definitions in a real project. Graders look for accurate use of concepts from Rose and the PMBOK Guide, such as the difference between quality and grade or between conformance and fitness for use, and for an explanation of how quality should be built in from the start rather than inspected at the end. A scholarly source, though not required, strengthens the analysis. A biblical perspective, APA form and a last line that gives two classmates something to answer complete the thread.

MGMT 645 Week 1 help: mistakes that cost points

Students often open this forum with a definition of quality copied from a dictionary or a website. Use the course's own definitions instead, and show how they differ by applying them to one project. A project that met its specifications but disappointed its users makes the point most clearly. Distinguish quality from grade: a basic laminate countertop can be high quality and a luxury stone counter low quality if it is installed badly. Stay inside the 400-to-1,000-word band, and aim for the middle, since the guide reads both limits. Because there is no source requirement, it is tempting to cite nothing, but at least Rose and the PMBOK Guide should appear. Finish by asking about a project from the classmates' own work.

A complete MGMT 645 Week 1 thread on a kitchen remodel that met every specification and still failed its homeowner is available on this page.

What is the difference between quality and grade?

The PMBOK Guide treats quality as how far a product's characteristics meet its requirements, while grade is a category of products with the same use but different technical features.

What is fitness for use?

Joseph Juran's definition of quality as the extent to which a product serves its user's actual purposes, as opposed to simply matching its written specifications.
