COUC 521 Week 8 DB Forum 4 Example

Reviewed by Allison Pemberton, PhD · Liberty University · Updated

This COUC 521 Week 8 example is DB Forum 4, the last 40-point forum of Liberty University COUC 521, in which counseling students apply the ethics of assessment after reading chapters 15 and 17 of Drummond, Sheperis and Jones, the ACA Code of Ethics, a presentation and an article. The composite prompt asks what a counselor should do before testing a client whose language or culture differs from the population a test was developed with. The thread uses a recent immigrant from Guatemala as its example and walks through three obligations drawn from Section E of the ACA Code: choose instruments suited to the client, explain the purpose and use of testing, and interpret results with caution when norms do not fit. It closes with how the counselor would report those limits. The reply adds a framework for identifying which cultural factors matter for a given client.

Discussion Board Forum 4: Thread and Reply

COUC 521 Assessment Techniques in Counseling, Discussion Board Forum 4 (thread and reply)

Thread by [Student Name]

The prompt, the client example and the classmate's post are composites standing in for the course's own forum; the ethics code, textbook, framework and study are real and described from their published sources; the requirements follow Liberty's public course guide for COUC 521.

Thread

Why this part earns its pointsThe thread begins with a single client so the ethical standards that follow have a case to apply to.

Imagine a client who arrived from rural Guatemala two years ago, speaks Spanish and some K'iche', and reports trouble sleeping and constant worry. Before giving any test, the ACA Code of Ethics points to three obligations (American Counseling Association, 2014).

First, choose instruments that fit the client. The code asks counselors to use assessments appropriate to a client's culture and language, so I would look for a version validated in Spanish and ask whether her Spanish is strong enough for written items or whether a trained interpreter should read them. Second, obtain informed consent by explaining in language she understands why I am testing, what the results are for and who will have access to them. Third, interpret cautiously. When a test's norms do not include people like her, the code asks counselors to state that limitation in the report.

Course research shows why this matters. Huang et al. (2006) found that the PHQ-9 measured one common concept of depression across four racial and ethnic groups, yet some items functioned differently between groups. Even a well-validated instrument can mean slightly different things to different clients, so the counselor's report must say what the score can and cannot show. Drummond et al. (2016) treat that kind of careful communication of results as part of competent assessment, not an optional addition.

Classmates: what would you do if no validated version existed in a client's language?

Why this part earns its pointsThe reply offers one practical framework in under 100 words.

Lauren, your point that culture is more than language is important. One tool that could help is the ADDRESSING framework (Hays, 2016), whose ten letters remind us to ask about influences such as generation, disability, faith, ethnicity, class, sexuality, indigenous roots, country of origin and gender. For the Guatemalan client in my thread, indigenous heritage and national origin might shape how she describes worry, which a checklist alone could miss. Asking her directly how people in her community talk about worry would be a good first step.

What the COUC 521 Week 8 instructions ask

DB Forum 4 is due in Module/Week 8 of COUC 521 for 40 points, with Quiz 8, as students finish the course with chapters 15 and 17 of Drummond, Sheperis and Jones, the ACA Code of Ethics, a presentation and an article. As in the earlier forums, the student answers the instructor in 200 to 250 words and, before the module closes, responds to one classmate in 75 to 100. The course competency map assigns this forum to ethical and culturally relevant strategies for selecting, administering and interpreting assessments and test results, which draws the course's technical material together.

How this COUC 521 Week 8 example is built

The thread opens with a specific client, so the ethical principles that follow have a case to attach to. It then names three obligations from the assessment section of the ACA Code and shows what each requires in practice: selecting a measure validated in the client's language or using an interpreter-administered interview, obtaining informed consent with a clear explanation, and reporting results with stated cautions. A sentence on the course's own instruments links the forum to earlier work, since the PHQ-9 was tested across four racial and ethnic groups. The reply, kept under 100 words, adds a framework for considering cultural influences systematically.

COUC 521 Week 8 grading rubric: where the points go

The final forum is graded on accurate use of the ACA Code and the textbook, on staying inside the thread and reply limits, and on correct citation. Graders look for ethical standards applied to a concrete case rather than listed, and for practical steps a counselor would take before, during and after testing. Threads that connect the ethics of assessment to specific instruments studied in the course show integration of the term's work. Strong replies add one usable idea, such as a framework or a source, and engage the classmate's example. An open and respectful tone, important on a topic involving culture, is part of the evaluation, and posts that avoid generalizing about whole groups read as more professional.

COUC 521 Week 8 help: mistakes that cost points

Ethics forums are easiest to write, and easiest to write poorly, by listing code sections. Instead, start with one client and let the code tell you what to do for that person. Read Section E of the ACA Code before posting and paraphrase its obligations accurately rather than quoting long passages. Name a specific instrument and say what you would check about it, such as whether it has been validated in the client's language. Keep the thread inside 250 words by choosing three obligations, not every one. Mention the course's own instruments where they fit, since the forum is a chance to pull the term together. For the reply, add something your classmate can use in practice, such as a framework or a validated translation, and stay under 100 words.
