COUC 500 Orientation to Counselor Professional Identity and Function, Discussion Board Forum 2 (thread and reply)
Thread by [Student Name]
The prompt and the classmate's post are composites standing in for the course's own forum; the law, Scripture, textbooks and published studies are real; the requirements follow Liberty's public course guide for COUC 500.
Thread
My policy is a federal statute signed in October 2020, the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, which set aside 988 as a short number for suicide prevention and mental health emergencies. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline began operating nationwide in July 2022, replacing a ten-digit number that few people could remember. Callers can now phone, text or chat, and calls route to a local crisis center when one is available, with backup centers answering when the local line is busy. Granello and Young (2019) describe counselors' responsibility to understand the systems of care their clients move through, and for clients in crisis, 988 is now often the first door.
Evidence supports the idea that crisis lines help. Gould et al. (2007) studied more than a thousand suicidal people who phoned eight American crisis centers. By the time each call ended, callers rated themselves less suicidal than when it started, and among those reached again weeks later, hopelessness and emotional pain had kept falling. The callers who still wanted to die when they hung up were the ones most at risk weeks later, so what happens during the conversation carries real weight.
A number alone, however, is not a system. Hogan and Goldman (2021) argue that real crisis care requires regional call centers, mobile crisis teams and crisis facilities, so that people in distress are not left in emergency departments or handled by police with little training. 988 is the front door to a crisis system, and counselors have a stake in whether anything stands behind that door in their communities.
For practice, I would add 988 to every client's safety plan, next to the names of people the client can reach first, explain to clients what happens when they call or text, and learn which mobile crisis services my county offers. Counselors can also advocate for funding of local crisis services, an extension of the professional advocacy the course has emphasized.
Isaiah describes a servant gentle enough to leave a bruised reed unbroken and a dim wick still lit (English Standard Version Bible, 2001/2016, Isaiah 42:3). A crisis counselor's first job is much the same: keep a faint flame alight until more help arrives.
Classmates: have you or someone you know used 988, and did it connect to further help?
Reply to Andrea
Andrea, you chose the federal mental health parity law and argued that it changed little because many people still cannot find counselors who accept their insurance. Your point about access is important, and research suggests the law has had at least some measurable effect. McGinty et al. (2015) found that after federal parity legislation took effect, enrollees in affected plans became more likely to use out-of-network substance use disorder treatment services, which suggests that parity reduced some financial barriers even where networks remained thin. The finding supports your concern that networks matter, while showing that coverage rules can still change behavior. For counselors, it may be a reason to understand clients' out-of-network benefits and to help clients ask their plans about reimbursement before they assume care is out of reach. Parity, in other words, works best when someone explains it to the people it protects. Do you think counselors should join insurance panels to improve access, even when reimbursement is low?

What the COUC 500 Week 8 instructions ask
COUC 500 ends with its second forum, a 75-point post in the final module due alongside Quiz 14, a wrap-up activity and confirmation that the COUN 050 orientation is complete, with Granello and Young's fourteenth chapter as the reading. Its format repeats the first forum. A thread of 350 to 400 words must rest on a scholarly source or more in APA form, and the one response to a classmate, 150 to 200 words long, needs its own scholarly backing. In the course competency map, this forum serves as evidence of knowledge about the history of clinical mental health counseling and the legislation and public policy that affect it.
How this COUC 500 Week 8 example is built
The thread opens with the policy itself: a federal law passed in 2020 that designated 988 as the national number for suicide prevention and mental health crises, which went live in July 2022. It then explains the evidence behind crisis lines, using an evaluation that found suicidality declining during calls, and the larger argument that a number is only the front door to a crisis system that also needs mobile teams and stabilization facilities. A paragraph on implications describes how counselors can refer clients, include 988 in safety plans and advocate for local crisis services. Scripture and a question close the thread. The reply adds parity research and stays within 200 words.
COUC 500 Week 8 grading rubric: where the points go
Forum 2 is scored on what the student knows from the course, on a thread that keeps to the 350-to-400 range and a reply that keeps to 150 to 200, and on one scholarly source per post in correct APA form. A high-scoring thread gets the policy's facts right, including what it does and the year it began, and shows with published research why counselors should care rather than offering opinion alone. A high-scoring reply brings new evidence to the classmate's policy instead of repeating it. Graders also want the policy tied to a counselor's daily practice, and they notice accurate legal details, tight writing inside the limits and clean references.
COUC 500 Week 8 help: mistakes that cost points
Policy posts lose credibility with a single wrong date or name, so confirm the statute's name, its year of passage and its effective date first. Show the policy's importance by linking it to a documented need, such as the number of people in crisis or gaps in services, and cite a study for that link. Then say what the policy asks of counselors in practice, for example how they will use it with clients. Keep background short, since the thread has a 400-word ceiling. In the reply, add one study about the classmate's policy and a question. Because this forum ends the course, tying the policy to the counselor you are becoming makes a fitting close.

COUC 500 Week 8 questions, answered
What is COUC 500 DB Forum 2?
It is the closing discussion of the course, carrying 75 points at the end of the eight modules; each student picks a law or public policy touching counseling, writes a thread of up to 400 words and answers one classmate.
Where can I find a free COUC 500 Week 8 sample paper?
A complete COUC 500 Week 8 forum on the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and what it means for counselors, with a cited reply, appears on this page.
When did 988 begin?
Congress set aside the three-digit number in a 2020 law, and the lifeline switched on across the country in July 2022, so anyone can now dial or text 988 in a crisis.
Do crisis hotlines help suicidal callers?
Evidence says yes for many callers: in a study of eight American centers, suicidal callers left the call less suicidal than they began it, and their hopelessness kept easing in the weeks after.
What does mental health parity law do?
Parity rules stop many insurers from setting tighter limits on counseling and addiction care than on medical care, and research has tied the federal law to more people using such services.
