COUC 521 Week 6 DB Forum 3 Example

Reviewed by Allison Pemberton, PhD · Liberty University · Updated

This COUC 521 Week 6 example is DB Forum 3, the third short forum in Liberty University COUC 521 for counseling students, written after chapters 9 and 10 of Drummond, Sheperis and Jones, four presentations and an article. In the composite prompt, students contrast interpreting a score against other people with interpreting it against a fixed standard, and say when a counselor should rely on each. The thread uses two instruments from the course: a personality inventory that reports percentiles against a large comparison group, and a depression questionnaire whose cut-off of 10 was set against diagnostic interviews, where it identified major depression with 88% sensitivity and specificity. It argues that the two answer different questions, one about how a client compares with others and one about whether a client meets a standard. The reply adds a caution about choosing the right comparison group.

Discussion Board Forum 3: Thread and Reply

COUC 521 Assessment Techniques in Counseling, Discussion Board Forum 3 (thread and reply)

Thread by [Student Name]

The prompt and the classmate's post are composites standing in for the course's own forum; the textbook and studies are real and described from their published sources; the requirements follow Liberty's public course guide for COUC 521.

Thread

Why this part earns its pointsThe thread defines both terms at once and then uses one real instrument for each, which fits the 250-word limit.

Norm-referenced interpretation tells us how a client compares with other people; criterion-referenced interpretation tells us whether a client meets a defined standard (Drummond et al., 2016). The difference sounds technical, but it changes what a score means and which decisions it can support.

The IPIP-NEO we used for our psychological reports is norm-referenced. A neuroticism score at the 88th percentile means the client scored higher than about 88% of the comparison group, but it says nothing about whether that level is a problem. The PHQ-9 works differently. Kroenke et al. (2001) checked its scores against independent diagnostic interviews and found that totals of 10 and higher picked out 88% of people with major depression while correctly clearing 88% of people without it. That cut-off is a criterion: it answers whether a client probably meets a clinical standard, regardless of how others score.

A percentile answers "compared with whom," while a cut-off answers "measured against what," and counselors need to know which question they are asking before they read a score. In practice, I would use criterion-referenced scores for screening and treatment decisions and norm-referenced scores to describe a client's traits or abilities relative to peers, always checking that the norm group or standard fits the client in front of me.

Classmates: can you think of a test that offers both kinds of interpretation?

Andre, your example of an achievement test reported as percentiles was helpful. One caution I would add is that a percentile is only meaningful if the comparison group fits the client. Huang et al. (2006) found that even a criterion-based depression measure behaved slightly differently across racial and ethnic groups, so comparison groups matter even more for norm-referenced scores. Checking who was in the norm sample, and when it was collected, seems like a necessary first step before telling a client where they stand.

What the COUC 521 Week 6 instructions ask

Module/Week 6 of COUC 521 brings DB Forum 3, worth 40 points, together with Quiz 6, while the class reads chapters 9 and 10 of Drummond, Sheperis and Jones, reviews four presentations and reads one article. Because the Psychological Report has just been completed, students can draw on instruments they have already scored themselves. The student answers the instructor's prompt in a thread of 200 to 250 words and, in the same module, posts one reply of 75 to 100 words to a classmate. According to the course competency map, this forum addresses standardized and non-standardized testing, norm-referenced and criterion-referenced assessment, group and individual assessment, statistical concepts and reliability and validity.

How this COUC 521 Week 6 example is built

The thread defines both kinds of interpretation in its opening lines, then makes the distinction concrete with two familiar instruments. A five-factor inventory shows norm-referenced scoring, where a percentile tells the counselor how a client compares with a comparison group. A depression screen shows criterion-referenced scoring, where a cut-off was set by checking scores against a standard, a diagnostic interview. A practical sentence explains when each is most useful, and the thread closes with a question for classmates. The reply, under 100 words, adds that a norm-referenced score is only as meaningful as the match between the client and the comparison group.

COUC 521 Week 6 grading rubric: where the points go

Forum 3 is graded on accurate understanding of the module's concepts, on a thread of 200 to 250 words and a reply of 75 to 100, and on correct citation. Because the word limit is tight, graders look for precise definitions followed by an example rather than a general discussion. Threads that use real instruments and real figures to show the difference earn more credit than those that define terms alone. A clear statement of when each approach is appropriate demonstrates the applied understanding the course is building. Strong replies add a single, specific point, such as a caution about norm groups or cut-offs, and respond to the classmate's actual example. Posts that confuse percentiles with percentage correct, a common slip on licensure exams, signal that the concepts need review before the Test Critique.

COUC 521 Week 6 help: mistakes that cost points

Definitions are the easy part of this forum; the challenge is showing why the difference matters in counseling. Choose two instruments you have used in the course, one of each type, and explain what a score on each tells you and what it does not. Use the textbook's terms accurately: percentiles and standard scores belong to norm-referenced interpretation, while cut-offs and mastery levels belong to criterion-referenced interpretation. Keep within 250 words by cutting background and using one example per concept, and give one real figure for each. For the reply, find something your classmate's example leaves out, such as the norm group or the standard used, and add it in a sentence or two.

What is COUC 521 DB Forum 3?

A 40-point Module/Week 6 forum in COUC 521 with a 200-to-250-word thread answering the instructor's prompt on testing concepts and one reply of 75 to 100 words.

Where can I find a free COUC 521 Week 6 sample paper?

A complete COUC 521 Week 6 forum comparing norm-referenced and criterion-referenced interpretation with examples from two real instruments, plus a short reply, is on this page.

What is the difference between norm-referenced and criterion-referenced tests?

A norm-referenced score compares a person with a reference group, often as a percentile, while a criterion-referenced score compares performance with a fixed standard or cut-off.

Is the PHQ-9 cut-off criterion-referenced?

Its cut-off of 10 was evaluated against independent diagnostic interviews, and that threshold was judged by how well it matched interview diagnoses, not by how other people scored, which makes it a standard rather than a norm.

What else is due in COUC 521 Module/Week 6?

Quiz 6, with 10 open-book multiple-choice questions per chapter on chapters 9 and 10 of Drummond, Sheperis and Jones and a one-hour time limit.
