BUSI 428 Week 3 Case Study 3 Example

Reviewed by Laura Hargrove, MPH · Liberty University · Updated

This BUSI 428 Week 3 sample case study examines social media as a marketing channel for a regional children's hospital whose posts draw likes but rarely change what families do. A study of 82 U.S. children's hospitals found that only 7% of more than 55,000 posts in 2023 addressed injury prevention, even though injuries are the leading cause of death in children, while most posts were general publicity. A second study of 721 hospital accounts found that posting more often and interacting with followers grew reach and engagement. The response recommends a content plan built around the community's health needs, a steady posting rhythm and two-way conversation, with measures that go beyond follower counts. A proverb about a word fitly spoken frames the message strategy. Liberty University BUSI 428 places this healthcare administration case in its third week, alongside Forum 3.

More Than Applause: Rethinking a Children's Hospital's Social Media Strategy

The Case

Our regional children's hospital posts daily on three social media platforms. Its most popular content features therapy dogs, staff birthdays and patient milestones, and follower counts have grown steadily. Yet when the hospital's trauma program asked for help promoting safe sleep and car seat checks, the posts drew little attention, and the marketing team had no plan for health education. Leaders began to ask whether a channel that reaches tens of thousands of local parents could do more than entertain them, and whether its success should be judged by something other than likes. The case asks whether the channel is being used well and what should change.

Why this part earns its pointsTwo studies show the pattern is common and suggest which practices build reach, so the plan rests on evidence.

What the Evidence Shows

Cellucci et al. (2014) remind marketers that every channel should serve a defined audience and purpose, and that a message is effective only when it moves people toward an action. By that standard, our channel is popular but underused. Our pattern is also typical. Agarwal et al. (2026) reviewed every 2023 post from the Facebook, Instagram and X accounts of 82 U.S. children's hospitals, 55,339 posts in all, and found that only 7.0% addressed injury prevention, even though preventable injuries are the leading cause of death in children. Most other posts were general publicity and goodwill. The authors called this a missed opportunity for education and advocacy, since families already follow these accounts and trust the hospitals behind them.

Research also suggests how to build reach without losing purpose. Zhong et al. (2025) studied 721 verified hospital accounts and found that two strategies, posting more often and interacting with followers, were consistently associated with greater reach, approval, interaction and sharing. A 10% increase in posts was associated with about a 4.8% increase in followers.

Why this part earns its pointsThe recommendation keeps the content families enjoy while adding a clear health purpose.

Recommendation

I recommend keeping the warm, personal content that families enjoy, since it builds the audience, while committing one post in five to prevention topics chosen from our own emergency department data, such as window falls in summer and poisonings during the holidays. Staff experts should answer questions in the comments within a day, which builds the interaction the research links to reach. Proverbs compares a word fitly spoken to apples of gold in a setting of silver (English Standard Version Bible, 2001/2016, Proverbs 25:11), and a timely prevention message, delivered by a trusted hospital, can be exactly that. Followers are an audience, not an outcome; the outcome is a family that buckles the car seat correctly.

How We Would Know

Beyond likes, the hospital should track sign-ups for car seat checks and safety classes, clicks to prevention resources and, over time, local injury visits for the targeted causes. Reviewing those measures each quarter would show which topics deserve more attention and which formats, such as short videos, reach parents best.

What the BUSI 428 Week 3 instructions ask

In Module/Week 3, BUSI 428 students read chapters 5 and 6 of Cellucci, Wiggins and Farnsworth, view a presentation, review two websites and submit Forum 3 and Case Study 3. The case response, at least 300 words long and formatted in current APA style, needs support from a single scholarly source and a connection to Scripture. Because the course asks for brief and concise answers, the best responses use headings that match the case questions and spend their words on analysis rather than on restating the case. Digital channels have become central to how health care organizations reach the public, which gives this kind of case broad relevance.

How this BUSI 428 Week 3 example is built

The sample summarizes the case: a children's hospital whose social media team measures success by likes and followers and whose leaders want the channel to do more for the community. It reviews what research shows about how children's hospitals actually use their accounts and which posting strategies build reach and engagement. The response then proposes a content mix that devotes a set share of posts to prevention topics chosen from local injury data, a predictable schedule and a practice of answering comments. A proverb about well-chosen words frames the case for purposeful messages. The closing section names measures that show whether the content changes awareness and behavior, not only applause.

BUSI 428 Week 3 grading rubric: where the points go

Graders for Case Study 3 usually check that each case question receives a direct answer, that marketing concepts such as target audience, channel and message are used accurately and that a scholarly source supports a specific claim. Scripture should connect to the substance of the response. Stronger responses go beyond describing social media to recommending what a hospital should post, how often and how success would be measured. Faculty notice when engagement numbers are treated as the goal rather than as a step toward a health or business result. Correct APA style throughout is expected, and a short closing on measurement shows the kind of accountability a marketing director would bring to leadership.

BUSI 428 Week 3 help: mistakes that cost points

Identify the case questions first and answer each under its own heading. Use chapters 5 and 6 to frame the problem in terms of audience, message and channel. Look for a peer-reviewed study on how hospitals or health systems use social media, and use a specific finding to support your recommendation. Think about what the organization wants people to do after seeing a post, and choose measures that capture that. Include a verse about speaking wisely or serving others. Keep the response brief but complete, and avoid naming a real hospital unless the case does. A recommendation with a specific share of posts or a specific schedule is more useful than a general call to post more.
