BUSI 616 Week 1 Contrasting Quality Philosophies Example

Reviewed by Thomas Kerrigan, MBA, CPA · Liberty University · Updated

This BUSI 616 Week 1 sample is the Contrasting Quality Philosophies paper, a 500-word comparison of W. Edwards Deming and Philip Crosby written for a composite Virginia dental laboratory whose crown remake rate has become its chosen quality problem. It contrasts Deming's view of quality as the product of a well-managed system with Crosby's view of quality as conformance to requirements, then asks which helps the laboratory compete, drawing on Goetsch and Davis, a theory-building study of the Deming method and an empirical study of total quality as competitive advantage. A closing section integrates Scripture on skilled, faithful work. Liberty University BUSI 616, Total Quality Management in the MBA, grades this first paper at 50 points in Module/Week 1.

Deming's System and Crosby's Requirements: Contrasting Two Quality Philosophies for a Dental Laboratory

The Organization and Its Quality Problem

Why this part earns its pointsThe paper names the organization's problem with a number in its opening lines, which gives both philosophies something concrete to be tested against.
3

Shenandoah Dental Arts, a composite dental laboratory in Harrisonburg, Virginia, employs 60 technicians who make crowns, bridges and dentures for about 400 dental practices. Last year 9.4 percent of its crowns came back for a remake, each costing the laboratory material and labor and costing the dentist a second patient appointment. Goetsch and Davis (2016) present several pioneers whose ideas could guide a response; this paper compares two of them, W. Edwards Deming and Philip Crosby.

Deming: Quality Comes From the System

In Deming's view, the bulk of defects originate in processes that managers design and own rather than in individual carelessness, and that managers must reduce variation by understanding it statistically. His 14 points call for constancy of purpose, an end to dependence on mass inspection, training on the job and driving out fear. Anderson et al. (1994) built a theory from Deming's writings in which visionary leadership enables cooperation and learning, which support process management and continuous improvement, which in turn lead to employee fulfillment and customer satisfaction. For Shenandoah, Deming would ask how much of the remake rate comes from variation in scanning, design and milling that no individual technician controls. He would also warn against the laboratory's current response, a final inspection bench that catches some poor fits before shipping, because inspection sorts bad crowns from good ones without changing the process that made them. Blaming the technician whose name is on a returned case would, in his terms, punish people for the system's variation and teach them to hide problems.

Crosby: Quality Is Conformance to Requirements

Crosby defined quality as conformance to requirements, insisted that the performance standard is zero defects and argued that the right measure of quality is the price of nonconformance, the cost of doing things wrong (Goetsch & Davis, 2016). His message that "quality is free" holds that prevention costs less than the remakes it avoids. Crosby would ask whether each dentist's prescription states clear requirements for margin, contacts and shade, and what remakes cost the laboratory in a year. At roughly 1,100 remade crowns, even a modest cost per remake becomes a figure large enough to fund prevention, such as a prescription checklist and a design review before milling.

Competitiveness

Why this part earns its pointsThe competitiveness section uses evidence on performance rather than either theorist's own claims, which keeps the comparison from becoming advocacy.

In the study by Powell (1995), the familiar instruments of a quality program, training, process improvement and benchmarking among them, did not generally yield an advantage, whereas tacit, hard-to-copy features such as committed executives, openness and empowered employees could. What competitors cannot copy is not the fishbone chart but the way management behaves around it. That finding favors Deming's emphasis on leadership, yet Crosby adds what Shenandoah lacks most: precise requirements and a dollar figure that will hold an owner's attention. The laboratory competes on fit and turnaround, so it needs both.

Biblical Integration

Why this part earns its pointsThe integration connects Scripture to the paper's specific argument about skilled, careful work rather than to quality in general.
5

Proverbs pictures a craftsman so capable at the trade that kings, not unknown men, become the ones served (English Standard Version Bible, 2001/2016, Proverbs 22:29). Excellence in craft honors God, and a crown that fits the first time also honors the patient who trusted the dentist. Deming's respect for workers and Crosby's insistence on prevention both serve that end, and together they remind the laboratory's owners that stewardship includes the system in which their technicians practice their skill.

What the BUSI 616 Week 1 instructions ask

Module/Week 1 of BUSI 616 opens with chapters 1 to 3 of the Goetsch and Davis quality management text, three presentations and a website, along with the requirements checklist, introductions and Discussion Board Forum 1. The Contrasting Quality Philosophies assignment directs students to pick two of the quality theorists from the reading, compare and contrast their ideas, and discuss what each philosophy means for business competitiveness, with biblical integration. Liberty sets the length at about 500 words. Two scholarly articles plus the textbook make the three required references, formatted in current APA style, and the paper carries its own title page and reference page. The student's selected organization and its quality problem, introduced here, carry through every later assignment and the closing presentation.

How this BUSI 616 Week 1 example is built

The sample introduces the laboratory and its problem in two sentences, then gives each theorist a short section. Deming's section stresses variation, the system and management's responsibility, using Anderson, Rungtusanatham and Schroeder's theory of the Deming method. Crosby's section stresses requirements, prevention and the cost of nonconformance. Five contrasts are then laid out in a table. The competitiveness section uses Powell's finding that tacit features such as executive commitment and empowerment, rather than tools, explain the advantage some quality programs produce, and concludes that the laboratory needs Deming's system thinking with Crosby's precise requirements. Scripture on diligent, skilled work closes the paper.

BUSI 616 Week 1 grading rubric: where the points go

Instructors read this paper for an accurate comparison of two theorists drawn from the assigned chapters, not a biography of each. Strong papers name the central ideas precisely, such as Deming's system of profound knowledge and his 14 points or Crosby's absolutes of quality and zero defects, show where the two agree and differ, and connect each to competitive advantage with evidence. Biblical integration should be woven into the argument rather than added in a final sentence. With only about 500 words available, organization matters: a clear thesis, parallel treatment of the two theorists and a conclusion that applies them to the selected organization. Three references in current APA format, including two scholarly articles, a title page and correct citations complete the grading.

BUSI 616 Week 1 help: mistakes that cost points

The usual failure here is a pair of mini-biographies followed by a sentence saying both men cared about quality. Pick contrasts that matter: who is responsible for defects, how quality is defined, the role of inspection and the place of statistics. Choose theorists whose differences you can apply to your own organization, because every later BUSI 616 assignment builds on this one. Keep the word count near 500; a 900-word paper suggests the writer could not choose. Cite the scholarly articles for claims about effects on performance, not for definitions the textbook already gives. And introduce your organization's quality problem concretely, with a number if possible, so the Module/Week 5 tool and Module/Week 6 PDCA paper have something to measure.
