Discussion Board Forum 1 Replies: The Planner-Client Relationship
BUSI 352 Financial Planning, Discussion Board Forum 1 Replies
Thread by [Student Name]
The two classmates and their threads are composites; the textbook, research and Scripture cited are real.
Reply to Gavin
Gavin, your thread argued that most people would do better investing on their own than paying an adviser, and the research gives you some support. Hackethal et al. (2012) studied accounts at a large German brokerage and found that accounts run with an adviser earned lower returns after costs and traded more than self-directed accounts. Advisers tended to work with older, wealthier and more experienced clients, so the authors compared advisers to babysitters, paid mostly for oversight.
The study cannot show what those advised clients would have earned alone, though. Some might have panicked in a downturn, sold at the bottom or never invested at all, and those mistakes can cost far more than an adviser's fees. Dalton et al. (2016) describe planning as more than picking investments, including budgeting, insurance and retirement goals, where advice may add value the study did not measure, such as a well-timed reminder to raise retirement contributions. Proverbs says that with many counselors plans succeed (English Standard Version Bible, 2001/2016, Proverbs 15:22), but the counsel must be good. Would a fee-only planner paid for a plan, not for trades, avoid the problem the study found?
Reply to Sierra
Sierra, your thread made a strong case that financial literacy is a client's best protection against bad advice, since a client who understands the basics can ask better questions. Recent evidence shows how much work remains. Lusardi and Mitchell (2023) summarize two decades of research using three basic questions on compound interest, inflation and diversification, and report that only about a third of American adults answer all three correctly, with lower scores among younger adults and women. Lower literacy was linked to weaker retirement planning, less saving and costlier borrowing, and the authors argue that literacy works partly by helping people recognize when they need help. A client who cannot work out how inflation erodes savings may also be unable to judge whether an adviser's projection is realistic.
Dalton et al. (2016) use the time value of money throughout this module/week's chapters, which is exactly the concept the first question tests. Proverbs commends the one who gathers little by little (English Standard Version Bible, 2001/2016, Proverbs 13:11), a principle compound interest makes concrete for anyone who sees the numbers. Do you think churches could help close that gap by teaching these basics alongside stewardship lessons?

What the BUSI 352 Week 2 instructions ask
Module/Week 2 assigns chapters 3 and 4 of Dalton et al., on financial statements and the time value of money, with a presentation and Quiz 2. The graded discussion work is the Forum 1 replies: two classmates each receive a reply of about 200 words, and each reply needs one or more citations from a current academic journal in current APA format. Combined, the replies carry 30 points. Because the requirement is a journal article rather than the textbook, a reply should bring research the classmate did not already use, rather than repeating the classmate's own sources back to them or relying on general agreement.
How this BUSI 352 Week 2 example is built
Two short replies of about two hundred words each make up the page, and each does one thing. The first engages a classmate's do-it-yourself argument with a study that compared advised and self-directed brokerage accounts, then names the study's limit so the reply does not overstate the evidence. The second supports a classmate's emphasis on financial literacy with a recent review of literacy research and adds a practical suggestion. Both replies begin with the classmate's own point, cites one journal article, includes a verse that fits the point and closes with a question. The replies stay near the 200-word target, because the course guide names a target length, not a floor.
BUSI 352 Week 2 grading rubric: where the points go
Instructors check that each reply works with the classmate's thread using course knowledge, reach about 200 words and include at least one citation from a current academic journal in current APA format. Replies that add new evidence, or tests the classmate's claim against research, contributes more than praise. Because the course asks for biblical knowledge in the forums, a relevant verse strengthens a reply, though the journal citation is the stated requirement. Instructors also notice when a reply reports a study accurately, including its limits. Each of the two replies is evaluated separately for length and sources. Each reply should show which part of the classmate's thread it is answering, so the connection is obvious.
BUSI 352 Week 2 help: mistakes that cost points
Pick threads that make a claim you can support or test with research. Search the Jerry Falwell Library for a recent journal article on the claim, such as studies of advised versus self-directed investors or of financial literacy. Summarize the finding in one or two sentences and note one limit. Tie it to the classmate's example. Add a verse if it fits the point, and explain the connection briefly. Finish with a question the classmate will want to answer. Keep each reply close to 200 words, and give each journal article a full APA entry. If you disagree with a classmate, phrase the point as a question the research raises rather than as a correction.
