BUSI 444 Week 1 Discussion Board Forum 1 Example

Reviewed by Thomas Kerrigan, MBA, CPA · Liberty University · Updated

This BUSI 444 Week 1 sample discussion responds to the opening forum's question about the role of training in organizations, arguing that training should be managed as an investment whose return depends on design, support and measurement. The thread draws on the first chapter of Noe's Employee Training and Development, which places training within a broader system of learning and business strategy, and on a meta-analysis showing that well-designed training produces meaningful gains in learning, behavior and results, with larger gains where programs were designed and evaluated with care. The reply, kept within the 250 to 350 words the guide allows, adds a review of what matters before, during and after training to a classmate's worry that most training is wasted. Liberty University BUSI 444 assigns 100 points to every one of its three discussions in this BS in Business Administration course on developing people.

Discussion Board Forum 1: The Role of Training

BUSI 444 Human Resource Development, Discussion Board Forum 1 Thread and Reply

Thread by [Student Name]

The forum prompt and the classmate are composites; the textbook and the research cited are real, and the structure follows Liberty's public course guide for BUSI 444.

Thread

Why this part earns its pointsThe thread states its position first and then names the conditions that make it true.

Many organizations treat training as an expense to be cut when budgets tighten. I want to argue that training is better understood as an investment, one whose return depends on how it is designed, supported and measured.

Noe (2020) defines training as a company's deliberate attempt to help employees acquire the knowledge, skills and behaviors their jobs require, and he places it within a broader picture of learning that includes development, knowledge management and informal learning on the job. In that picture, training is not an event but part of how a company competes. A business that competes on service, for example, depends on employees who can solve customer problems, and training is one of the main ways it builds that capability.

The evidence supports treating training as an investment. Arthur et al. (2003) conducted a meta-analysis of training studies in organizations and reported medium to large training effects on employees' learning, their on-the-job behavior and organizational results, and they showed that how well training worked depended on the delivery method, the kind of skill involved and how outcomes were measured. Training works, but not automatically, and programs built without attention to design often disappoint.

That variation is the key point. Like any investment, training pays when it is targeted at a real need, designed so that people can practice what they learn and supported back on the job. Noe's training design process, which moves from needs assessment through a supportive work environment, learning objectives, method selection and evaluation, is essentially a way of protecting the investment at each step.

Consider a regional hospital that trained its nurses in a new patient handoff procedure. By measuring handoff errors before and after the training, and by having charge nurses observe and coach the new procedure for a month, the hospital could show that errors dropped and connect the training to patient safety. Without that measurement, the same training would have looked like a cost on the budget.

Treating training as an investment also changes the questions managers ask. Instead of asking how much a program costs, they ask what problem it addresses, what success would look like and how they will know. Those questions push organizations toward needs assessment at the start and evaluation at the end, the two steps most often skipped. They also make training easier to defend when budgets tighten, since a program with evidence of results is harder to cut than one known only by its price.

Riley, you argued that most training is wasted because employees go back to their old habits as soon as they return to work, and I think many of us have seen exactly that. I would add that the research also shows what organizations can do about it.

Salas et al. (2012) summarized decades of training research and sorted its practical advice into steps taken before, during and after a program. Before training, organizations should assess needs carefully and prepare trainees and supervisors. During training, they should give people realistic practice and feedback. Afterward, they should clear away barriers to using what was learned, have supervisors reinforce it and check whether behavior actually changed. Their point is that transfer of training, the use of new skills on the job, depends heavily on the work environment, not just on the training session.

Noe (2020) makes a similar argument in describing a work environment that supports learning. In your example of the sales team that attended a negotiation workshop and never used the techniques, a manager who asked each rep to use one technique in the next week's calls, and then discussed how it went, might have made the difference. Supervisors who expect to see new skills, and who make time for practice, send a signal that the training matters, and employees respond to that signal more than to anything said in the classroom. Measuring a few calls before and after the workshop would also have shown whether the techniques were being used at all. Do you think the sales manager in your example saw the training as part of the job or as time away from it?

What the BUSI 444 Week 1 instructions ask

BUSI 444 begins with chapter 1 of Noe's Employee Training and Development, its presentation, the course checklist, introductions and the first 100-point discussion. Main posts have a band of 400 to 500 words and must show command of the reading, and every student answers one peer in 250 to 350 words. The guide does not set a minimum number of sources for forum posts, but citing the textbook and a study shows the course-related knowledge the rubric rewards. The upper limits matter as much as the lower ones, so posts should be edited to fit. Three forums appear in the course.

How this BUSI 444 Week 1 example is built

The thread takes a clear position, that training is an investment, and defends it with two kinds of evidence: the textbook's account of how training supports business strategy and a meta-analysis of training effectiveness. It then names the conditions under which the investment pays, drawn from the same research, and gives a short example from a hospital that measured its training. The reply engages a classmate who doubts that training changes behavior, agreeing that much training fails while pointing to a review of research that identifies what organizations can do before, during and after training to make it work. A hospital example shows how measurement turns training into a visible return. Both posts stay in range.

BUSI 444 Week 1 grading rubric: where the points go

Graders of Forum 1 expect an opening post that fits its 400 to 500 word band and a peer response that fits 250 to 350, both demonstrating knowledge of the course's introductory concepts, such as the training design process, the link between training and strategy, and the forms of learning organizations support. Graders want a stated position, Noe's terms used accurately and support from the textbook or research. Posts that stay within the word ranges and engage a classmate's specific argument score best. Although sources are not required by number, cited evidence makes the course knowledge visible. A concrete example, such as an organization that measured a program's results, makes the argument persuasive.

BUSI 444 Week 1 help: mistakes that cost points

Read chapter 1 closely enough to use its vocabulary, especially the training design process and the idea of training as part of a learning organization. Take a position on the forum's question in your first two sentences. Support it with the textbook and, ideally, one study on training effectiveness from a journal such as the Journal of Applied Psychology. Fit the main post into its 400 to 500 word band and the response into 250 to 350. When responding, address what the classmate actually claimed and contribute one fresh idea. Put your post up by midweek, and keep your sources for the case studies, which require recent scholarly references. Reread both posts once for clarity.

BUSI 444 Week 1 questions, answered

What is BUSI 444 Forum 1?

The course's opening discussion, worth 100 points, in which students argue a view on the place of training in organizations in 400 to 500 words and then answer one peer in 250 to 350.

Where can I find a free BUSI 444 Week 1 sample paper?

This page holds a complete BUSI 444 Week 1 forum thread and reply arguing that training is an investment, with the textbook and research cited in each post.

Does workplace training actually work?

Yes, when it is designed well; pooled studies of organizational training show real gains in what employees know, how they work and what the business achieves, with the size of the gains tied to design and delivery.

Do BUSI 444 forums require sources?

The guide requires course-related knowledge rather than a set number of sources, but citing the textbook and research is the clearest way to show that knowledge.

What else is due in BUSI 444 Module/Week 1?

Students also complete the course requirements checklist and introduce themselves to classmates, after reading chapter 1 of Noe and viewing the week's presentation.
