BUSI 365 Week 3 Group Discussion Board Forum 3 Example

Reviewed by Thomas Kerrigan, MBA, CPA · Liberty University · Updated

This BUSI 365 Week 3 sample is a group's answer to the global marketing forum, asking when a company should standardize its marketing across countries and when it should adapt. Using a U.S. sportswear brand as its example, the group recommends standardizing the brand's positioning and core products while adapting pricing, sizing, channels and some promotions, supported by a study of marketing strategy across Western markets and a study showing that consumers see brands they perceive as global as higher in quality and prestige. A reply to another group's post on packaged foods explains why food demands more adaptation than apparel. Marketing abroad is the theme of this 100-point group forum in Liberty University BUSI 365, where BS in Business Administration students work in assigned groups.

Group Discussion Board Forum 3: Global Marketing

BUSI 365 Global Industries and Operations, Group Discussion Board Forum 3 Thread and Reply

The discussion questions and the other group's post are composites; the research cited is real.

Why this part earns its pointsThe group splits the marketing mix element by element, which turns a general debate into a recommendation.

For a U.S. sportswear brand, our group recommends standardizing the brand's positioning, logo and core product designs worldwide while adapting pricing, sizing, distribution channels and some promotions to each market.

The case for standardizing strategy is supported by research. Szymanski et al. (1993) examined businesses in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and other Western markets and found that the same strategic factors drove marketing performance across them, which suggests that a common strategy can work in similar markets. Global image also has value of its own. Steenkamp et al. (2003) found that consumers who perceived a brand as global saw it as higher in quality and prestige, which raised their likelihood of buying it. For a sportswear brand, looking global is part of what customers are paying for.

Some elements should still change. Prices must reflect local incomes and competition, sizes must fit local body measurements, and the mix of online, department store and branded-store sales differs by country. Promotions that feature local athletes and sports, such as cricket in India or football in Europe, connect better than a single global campaign. Standardize what builds the brand, and adapt what helps it sell. Digital channels make this balance easier than it once was, since a single global campaign can be produced centrally and then cut into local versions with local faces, languages and offers at modest cost. The risk to manage is inconsistency: a local promotion that contradicts the global positioning weakens the very image that makes the brand valuable.

Why this part earns its pointsThe reply explains why the other group's industry needs more adaptation than apparel.

Group 4, your post on a packaged snack brand argued for mostly standardized marketing, and the cost savings you described are real. Food, however, tends to need more adaptation than apparel. Taste preferences differ sharply, ingredient and labeling rules vary by country, and package sizes must suit local shopping habits, such as daily purchases at small shops in many emerging markets. The brand image that Steenkamp et al. (2003) found valuable can still be global even when the product inside the package changes. Did your group find any examples of a snack brand that changed its recipe for one market but kept the same name and logo?

What the BUSI 365 Week 3 instructions ask

Global marketing is the topic for Module/Week 3, through the globalEDGE learning module that covers market selection, entry, the marketing mix across countries and the standardization-adaptation question. Group Discussion Board Forum 3 gives each group the week to research its questions and agree on one post, due late Friday, while replies to other groups wait until Monday; the forum counts for 100 points. Because the standardization question has no single answer, the strongest group threads take a position for a particular company and explain which parts of the marketing mix should travel unchanged and which should not.

How this BUSI 365 Week 3 example is built

A single company frames the answer, which makes it specific. The thread splits the marketing mix into elements to standardize and elements to adapt, with a reason for each. Two studies support the split: one found that the same strategic factors drove marketing success across Western markets, which favors standardizing strategy, and another found that perceived brand globalness raises perceived quality and prestige, which favors a consistent global image. The group then names the elements where local conditions win. The reply applies the same reasoning to another group's packaged-food example, explaining why taste, regulation and packaging push food brands toward more adaptation, and asks a question. The thread avoids naming every marketing concept and concentrates on the one decision that matters most.

BUSI 365 Week 3 grading rubric: where the points go

Grading for the group forums asks whether the thread answers the assigned questions with the globalEDGE module and research, whether the post meets the length and timing rules, and whether replies push the conversation forward. On a question like standardization versus adaptation, instructors reward threads that make a specific recommendation for a real or realistic company and justify it element by element. Evidence from marketing research strengthens the argument. A reply that tests the group's reasoning on another industry, or adds a consideration the other group missed, earns more than agreement. APA citations are expected. Clear writing helps.

BUSI 365 Week 3 help: mistakes that cost points

Pick one company and decide which parts of its marketing should be the same everywhere and which should change. Use the marketing mix, product, price, place and promotion, as a checklist. Find marketing research on standardization and on global branding to support your choices. Name the local factors that force adaptation, such as income, regulation, culture and retail structure. Combine the group's research into one thread before Friday. In the reply, compare your industry with the other group's and explain why the balance differs. The reply to another group is due Monday and needs more than 100 words. Find one real example of a brand that adapted a product for a market, with a source, to support your group's recommendation. Name the company you use as an example.
