NURS 765 Week 4 Discussion Board Forum 2 Example

Reviewed by Rachel Stanton, MSN, RN · Liberty University · Updated

This NURS 765 Week 4 sample thread asks what an organizing framework actually does for a nursing curriculum and answers with a practice doctorate the writer's faculty task force is designing for nurse leaders in rural Appalachia. It proposes a framework with three threads (rural populations, systems leadership and practice scholarship), argues that the framework only matters if it is mapped to the 2021 AACN Essentials course by course and warns, from a 2023 program quality framework, that curriculum drift slowly wears away whatever the faculty design. A step-wise gap analysis published in 2026 supplies the method. Liberty University NURS 765 places this second forum, worth 100 points, in Module/Week 4 of the PhD in Nursing course, with replies to two classmates that each bring in two new peer-reviewed sources.

Discussion Board Forum 2: Choosing and Protecting an Organizing Framework

NURS 765 Curriculum Development and Program Evaluation for Nurse Educators, Discussion Board Forum 2

Thread by [Student Name]

The university, program and classmates are composites; the textbook, Scripture and journal articles cited are real.

Why this part earns its pointsThe thread commits to a specific framework at once, so the discussion is about a real choice rather than a definition.

Our task force has settled on three threads for the organizing framework of the post-master's DNP we are planning: rural populations, systems leadership and practice scholarship. Keating (2015) describes the organizing framework as the structure that gives a curriculum its coherence, connecting the mission and philosophy to the program outcomes and determining how courses build on one another. Without one, a curriculum is a list of courses that happen to share a degree.

I have come to think of the framework as a promise the faculty make to students: if you take these courses in this order, you will reach these outcomes. A promise like that has to be checked. Pittman et al. (2026) describe a step-wise gap analysis for mapping baccalaureate and graduate curricula to the 2021 AACN Essentials, which contain ten domains, eight concepts and 45 competencies. Faculty reviewed the literature, identified evidence-informed practices, mapped selected courses and completed a validated gap analysis, using backward design and participatory action research so that the faculty owned the result. We plan to borrow that method: each of our three threads will be mapped to the advanced-level competencies, so that we can show, course by course, where rural population health or systems leadership is introduced, practiced and assessed.

Why this part earns its pointsThe second argument names the threat to the framework after it is approved, which is where most frameworks actually fail.

The harder problem comes after approval. Van de Mortel et al. (2023) describe curriculum drift, in which innovations are whittled away over time by incremental changes to individual courses until the accredited curriculum is no longer the one being taught. They propose a program quality framework in which teaching teams monitor delivery across the life of the curriculum and build staff capacity at the same time. For a small DNP faculty with several adjunct instructors, this is a real risk; a course on health policy could easily lose its rural focus after a change of instructor. Our plan is to attach the framework threads to each course's signature assignment and review those assignments every year.

Paul describes the same problem from the builder's side: "According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it" (English Standard Version Bible, 2001/2016, 1 Corinthians 3:10). Every adjunct, every new course lead and every revision committee builds on a foundation someone else laid. A framework protects a curriculum only if each later builder is shown the foundation and asked to take care how they build on it.

Reply to Rachel

Rachel, your school is weighing a concept-based framework for its BSN program, and you asked whether concepts can be mapped as cleanly as domains. Campbell et al. (2026) crosswalked eight competencies from the Age-Friendly 4Ms framework (what matters, medication, mentation and mobility) with entry-level and advanced competencies in the Essentials and found strong overlap, especially in collaboration and person-centered care, which produced four tailored competency sets for different learners. Their work suggests concepts and domains can be mapped together if faculty are explicit. Rogers et al. (2026) add a way to test whether the map holds, using simulation performance data to judge whether students actually reach program outcomes. Could your simulation scenarios be tagged by concept, so that weak concepts show up in the data?

Reply to Derek

Derek, you asked how a framework survives when most online sections are taught by adjunct faculty who did not help design it. Hardin et al. (2022) describe faculty in a DNP program who built a team-based case study assignment to help distance learners in advanced practice and nurse administrator tracks reach program competencies when in-person practicum experiences were disrupted. A shared assignment like that carries the framework into every section regardless of who teaches it. McRae et al. (2026) paired junior faculty with experienced mentors to prepare an accreditation self-study, which built understanding of the standards across the whole faculty. Pairing each adjunct with a framework mentor for the first term might give your program the same benefit. Which course would you start with?

What the NURS 765 Week 4 instructions ask

The second NURS 765 forum falls in Module/Week 4, alongside Keating's chapters 8 and 9 and a recorded presentation. As in every forum in the course, the thread has no set word count and is graded on the depth and breadth of course-related knowledge it shows. The thread cites two peer-reviewed references and the Bible, with Keating allowed as one of the two. Each of the two replies to classmates must cite two different peer-reviewed references, and the textbook may again stand in for one. Graduate-level writing and current APA citations are expected, without a cover page. Because the exact prompt appears only inside the course, the sample takes up the organizing framework, a topic that serves the group project ahead, and you should match your own thread to the wording you are given.

How this NURS 765 Week 4 example is built

The thread names the framework the task force is weighing for its rural DNP and explains what an organizing framework is for. It then makes two arguments. The first is that a framework becomes real only when it is mapped against the Essentials, using a published gap analysis method. The second is that even a well-mapped framework erodes through small course changes unless the faculty build in a way to protect it. A verse from Proverbs on foundations closes the argument. One reply helps a classmate weigh a concept-based framework for a BSN program; the other answers a classmate's question about keeping a framework alive in online courses taught by adjunct faculty.

NURS 765 Week 4 grading rubric: where the points go

Forum grading in this course usually weighs knowledge drawn from Keating and the module presentation, how deeply and widely that knowledge is applied, the required peer-reviewed sources and Scripture used correctly, the quality of the two replies and graduate writing in current APA style. A strong thread applies the concept of an organizing framework to a real program and takes a position on a choice faculty must make. Replies score well when they answer the classmate's actual situation with the two new sources and leave a question that moves the discussion forward. Source counts are checked, so match the thread and reply rules exactly.

NURS 765 Week 4 help: mistakes that cost points

Threads about organizing frameworks often define the term and list examples without saying what difference a framework makes. Pick one program, name the threads of its framework and show one place where the framework changes a course or an assignment. Then deal with a problem the framework will face, such as mapping to the Essentials or drift over time. Count your sources before posting: the thread needs a scholarly pair alongside Scripture, and every reply needs its own fresh pair. If you use Keating, count it once. In replies, quote or restate the classmate's concern first, then answer it, and avoid repeating your own thread.

What is an organizing framework in a nursing curriculum?

The set of concepts or threads that faculty choose to give a curriculum its shape, so that courses build on one another and the outcomes are reached by design.

What is curriculum drift?

The gradual loss of a curriculum's intended design as courses are changed one at a time, by different faculty, without checking the effect on the whole program.

How do schools map a curriculum to the AACN Essentials?

Faculty compare each course's outcomes and assignments with the Essentials domains and competencies, record where each competency is introduced and assessed and fix the gaps they find.
