| Path-Goal Leadership Questionnaire | Directive | High |
| Supportive | Moderate | |
| Participative | Low | |
| Achievement-oriented | High | |
| LMX 7, completed with my own supervisor | Exchange quality | 27, high |
| LMX 7, completed for two of my team members | Exchange quality | 31 and 19 |
What the Results Mean
In path-goal theory, leaders motivate by removing obstacles between followers and their goals, and they do it by choosing a style that fits the followers and the task (House, 1996; Northouse, 2019). My high directive and achievement-oriented scores fit my team's new members, who need clear instructions and challenging targets. But my low participative score means I rarely ask experienced members for input, even on tasks they know better than I do.
The theory also explains why the same habit helps one person and frustrates another. House (1996) argued that directive behavior adds the most when a task is ambiguous and followers are inexperienced, and adds little, or even irritates, when the work is routine and followers already know how to do it. Two of my five team members have more than eight years on our accounts. When I hand them a detailed checklist, I am supplying structure they do not need, and withholding the involvement in decisions that path-goal theory predicts would motivate them. My moderate supportive score suggests I am approachable, but approachability is not the same as asking.
The LMX 7 results are more troubling. My exchange with one team member scored 31, very high, while my exchange with another scored 19, low. Graen and Uhl-Bien (1995) describe leadership as developing in partnerships, and their leadership-making model urges a leader to extend an offer of partnership to each person on the team instead of letting a favored circle form. Gerstner and Day (1997) pooled dozens of studies and found that members who rated their exchange highly also tended to be rated as stronger performers, were more satisfied with their supervisors and were more committed to the organization, while turnover intentions ran lower. If my second team member is in my out-group, the problem may be my leadership, not his effort.
Strengths and Weaknesses
My strengths are clarity and high standards: my team rarely wonders what is expected. My weakness is that I rely on a few trusted people and give others fewer chances to contribute, which narrows the team's ideas and may leave some members disengaged. Last quarter, the team member with the lower exchange score proposed a change to our intake form in a meeting; I said I would look at it and never did, while I adopted a similar idea from my most trusted colleague a week later. He has not suggested anything since.
Action Plan
- By the end of this month, hold a one-on-one with the team member whose exchange scored 19, asking what he needs from me and what he would like to take on.
- Starting next week, ask experienced members for their approach before I assign any task they have done before.
- In three months, ask both team members to complete the LMX 7 about me and compare results.
James 2:1 warns against showing partiality (English Standard Version Bible, 2001/2016). A leader who favors an in-group, however unintentionally, falls short of that standard.

What the BUSI 503 Week 4 instructions ask
In week four, BUSI 503 assigns chapters 6 through 8 of Northouse, on path-goal theory, leader-member exchange theory and transformational leadership, together with assigned Scripture and a recorded lecture; the graded work is Case Study Response Forum 1 plus this 40-point profile. For each profile, students complete the assigned questionnaires from the chapters, reflect on their strengths and weaknesses, and create an action plan for applying what they learned, in at least 300 words of APA-formatted prose. The profile is short, so it rewards honest interpretation and a specific plan rather than a long description of each instrument.
How this BUSI 503 Week 4 example is built
The profile opens with a brief table of the questionnaire results and what each scale measures. It then interprets the path-goal results through the theory's idea that leaders should match their style to followers and tasks, and the LMX 7 results through research on in-groups, out-groups and exchange quality. A strengths paragraph and a weaknesses paragraph follow, each tied to specific behavior on the writer's team. The action plan names three changes with dates and a way to check progress, and a short link to Scripture frames the commitment to treat every team member fairly. The profile stays well above the 300-word minimum while remaining focused. The table carries the numbers so that the paragraphs can carry the reasoning, and the weakness is illustrated with one incident rather than described in general terms.
BUSI 503 Week 4 grading rubric: where the points go
Leadership profiles are graded on completing the assigned questionnaires, reporting results accurately, reflecting honestly on strengths and weaknesses, and presenting a specific action plan, in at least 300 words of APA format. Instructors look for the chapters' concepts applied to the writer's own leadership, such as directive, supportive, participative and achievement-oriented styles, task and follower characteristics, in-group and out-group relationships and the stages of a leadership-making process, rather than definitions alone. A plan with concrete actions, deadlines and a way to measure progress shows that the reflection is meant to change behavior. Citations to the textbook, and to research where it helps, strengthen the interpretation. A profile that shows how a score plays out with a particular person on the team is more convincing than one that restates the questionnaire's labels.
BUSI 503 Week 4 help: mistakes that cost points
Complete the questionnaires honestly, ideally asking a coworker to complete the LMX 7 about you as well, since self-ratings can flatter. Report scores briefly, then spend most of the profile on what they mean for your actual team. Connect each score to a concept from the chapter. Name one real weakness and its effect on someone. Make the action plan specific, naming each step, its deadline and the evidence that will show whether it succeeded. Keep the profile above 300 words and focused, and check the APA citations. Complete the first case study response the same week.
